Komodo Day 2

Day two of our three day adventure in Komodo National Park was the day we spent time on Komodo Island itself. It also was among our best days of vacation ever. I’ll again thank the trip photographer for his help documenting a wonderful vacation.

Komodo Island

We woke up right off shore from Komodo Island so we could get on land to see the dragons while they were still active in the morning.

After a few safety briefings, we were on our way.

Before spotting any dragons, we spotted dragon food.

Then there was the national park sign.

Then our first live Komodo dragon!

Then a second dragon!

Then best yet, we met a dragon coming towards us on a path in the woods on his way to get a drink.

And while that may have been the highlight, it wasn’t the end. We kept spotting more dragons. Including two together.

But eventually it was time to say good bye to the dragons and return to our boat.

Back in the boat, while still within sight of Komodo we saw a large pod of dolphins. No photos. I didn’t want to miss anytime watching the dolphins to grab a camera.

Pink Beach

Our next stop on the boat was a pink beach. The beaches are made pink by bits of red coral. How pink they are varies. Our ship’s photographer gave us quite the photo shoot while we were there.

Splash

Back at the boat we had fun jumping from the boat into the water.

Soft Coral Snorkeling

Next the ship took us to a place we could see lots of soft coral.

Flying Foxes

After drying off from snorkeling we had some time to enjoy the boat as we made our way to Kalong Island to watch the flying foxes come out.

Fly foxes are giant fruit bats with wingspans up to 5 ft (1.5m). One of the places they live is the mangrove forests of Kalong Island. At sunset they come out in the thousands. The combined experience of watching the massive bats fill the sky while enjoying a beautiful sunset was a great way to end a terrific day.
