Coffee Plantation

On our way back from Mt Batur our driver said we were running ahead of schedule and asked if we wanted to stop at Segara Windhu Coffee Plantation. We said yes and enjoyed the stop.

I anticipated seeing the plantation itself and maybe some coffee processing. Had I clung to this expectation, I would have been disappointed. Instead, our guide treated us to a quick show and tell of many tropical plants including coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon (even the leaves smell like cinnamon); a small zoo enclosure featuring a single luwak/civet (an animal that eats only the best coffee cherries and “processes” them); a coffee smelling buffet; and a free sampling of various coffees and infusions (with the opportunity to purchase kopi luwak).

On the way out we discovered the funding for the free tour and free samples: a gift shop to take home all the flavors we enjoyed.

I have heard about the “processing method” of the luwak coffee. I’m not sure it puts that coffee on my high priority of things to taste test. But I’d love to spend a day experimenting with that full flight of coffees. However, I like cream and sugar with my coffee and I doubt that will benefit my blood sugar levels.

Sounds a delectable culinary diversion – and a small zoo to boot!
