Mt Batur

We went for our second early morning in a row, this time waking up early to go on a hike for a sunrise view of a volcano. This big guy was outside our door waiting for us.

When we were talking about possible things to do in Bali, our kids had been excited about seeing a volcano. Looking into seeing Mt Batur, sunrise was the recommended time to go. In the process of looking at sunrise hike information we stumbled across this hike. While this hike is not up Mt Batur, you do get a great view of Mt Batur. The main perk is that rather than 600 people using the trail with you, you are on a trail limited to two groups (in our case our group of four and a group consisting of one couple).

Our hike-provided driver picked us up at our lodging, and transported us to the bank of Danau Batur (a lake within the Batur Caldera). We boarded a boat to take us to the trailhead. The short boat ride was pretty (though chilly) in the pre-dawn fog.

Going Up

We quickly warmed up once we started hiking up the steep trail.

On the way up, there were several spots to get great early morning views of the lake and surrounding mountains (including Mt Batur). Even from a distance we could see the trails of headlamps and flashlights making their way up Mt Batur.

At the Top

At the top a local lady provided us with hard boiled eggs, bananas, coffee, candy bars, and Nutella sandwiches to snack on while we waited for the sunrise.

We had beautiful views in all directions as the day dawned. We could see several mountains and the ocean.

Back Down

Hiking down in the daylight we saw different things than we had seen hiking up in the dark.

Then it was back across the water to the car.

Panoramas of city, sea, above clouds, below clouds – all part of a trek up a volcano – living a exotic dream!
