Bangkok and Beyond

  • Urban Oasis

Saturday morning we crossed the river to go for a bike ride in Bang Kachao (บางกะเจ้า), which in 2006 was dubbed “Best Urban Oasis” by Time in its “Best of Asia” series. Since 2006 it may have slipped in the rankings, but it was a wonderfully convenient getaway from the city. We traveled straight down…

  • Koh Larn

Over the weekend we went down to Koh Larn (เกาะล้าน). We were delighted to discover a pretty island getaway so close to us. One motivation for our trip was the continuation of our discovery of cute eateries. Tracey found Miffy’s Voyage Cafe and decided we should visit. We ended up eating there both on the…

  • Unicorn Cafe

Turns out the Unicorn Cafe is a thing. Proof: If you like sweet, the food was good. There were comments about how fresh the sprinkles tasted; we’re pretty sure the cafe goes through a lot of them on a regular basis. Don’t be thrown off by the one entrance being closed off, right around the…

  • October Break

Over our October break we enjoyed exploring a small piece of Thailand with family. Some highlights of our trip include:

  • Around the Airport

Saturday we woke up to a cool (rainy) morning and decided to go for a bike ride around the airport on the Happy & Healthy Bike Lane (สนามปั่นจักรยานเจริญสุขมงคลจิต). The rental bikes were the nicest we’ve seen in Thailand (and correspondingly the most expensive). FYI: You’ll need your passport the first time you go. The flat…

  • Kui Buri

On Day 4 of our October Break we spent a relaxing morning at our hotel before heading to Kui Buri National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติกุยบุรี) in the afternoon. Our primary goal at Kui Buri was to see wild elephants. Not only did we get to see the elephants, we also saw gaur, butterflies, moving plants, and mountains.…

  • Sam Roi Yot

We spent the third day of our October break in Sam Roi Yot National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาสามร้อยยอด). Wow! So many beautiful things to see. First stop was Phraya Nakon Cave (ถ้ำพระยานคร). Getting there included a quick boat ride (on which our boat captain pointed out dolphins!). The quarter mile up the mountain to the cave wasn’t…

  • Waterfalls and Elephants

Day 2 of our October break, opened with a trip to Pa La U Waterfall (น้ำตกป่าละอู), followed by an excellent (if late) lunch on our way to Elephant Village (หมู่บ้านช้างหัวหิน), we found dinner and some souvenirs at Cicada Market before wrapping up the day at the beach and in the pool. Pa La U was…

  • To Market

On our way down to Hua Hin for October break we stopped by Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and Maeklong Railway Market. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำดำเนินสะดวก) was the first floating market we had been to where we as shoppers could rent a boat to visit the market stalls. Shopping from a boat was a very…

  • Towers and Time Travel

As part of a birthday celebration we ate breakfast in the Baiyoke Sky Hotel. In addition to the food, we enjoyed the view (and the various props to augment our photos of said view). After breakfast we hopped in a Tuk Tuk, then in a boat to get to the Jim Thompson House. Jim Thompson…

  • “The Largest Private Outdoor Museum of All Humanity”

Thus proclaims the entry way to เมืองโบราณ, The Ancient City, 20 km south of us. We enjoyed our Saturday riding bikes through this collection of relocated historical Thai structures and replicas of historical Thai structures. We wrapped up our day with a trip to a nearby dessert place on the coast.

  • First Full Week

We celebrated our first five day week of school with a trip to Dairy Queen. Turns out you can get beans on your blizzard here. The kids opted for ice cream burgers. The “patty” was a chocolate coated ice cream; the “lettuce” was a green waffle cone sheet; the “ketchup” was strawberry sauce; and the…
