Stopping halfway between Vientiane and Vang Vieng on our Winter Break 2025-2026 visit to Laos, we spent two nights on the southern end of Nam Ngum Reservoir so we could take a hike to Zaova Waterfall (ນ້ຳຕົກ ຕາດຊາວວາ).
Pier to Village
A boat picked us up at Sukhanberry Pier (ທ່າເຮືອສຸຂະບຸລີ) and took us to the PhuKhaoNang Village Community Based Tourism’s home base.
We were arriving at the village as the children were leaving for school.

Village to Trailhead
In the village we switched guides. Our trail guide now piloted our boat the last little bit of our journey to the trailhead.

Trailhead to Waterfall
On the hike up to Zaova we saw a lot of flowers, fruit on trees, lovely scenery, and even a smaller waterfall.
While Zaova itself was flowing a bit weak, we enjoyed the grandeur of the Zoava gorge.
And Back Again
After descending, we were ferried back to the village
where we enjoyed some time on the porch while our pilot and guide tried to decipher notes left by others about our balance due. While waiting, we saw students returning to school from lunch.
