Khao Yai

My wife and kids recently had a long weekend. We took the opportunity to visit Khao Yai National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาใหญ่). It was the first national park in Thailand and is just two hours away from where we live.

The Khao Yai Visitor’s Center was probably the nicest national park visitor’s center we’ve been to so far in Thailand. (I’m afraid I didn’t take any pictures).

Immediately behind the visitor’s center was a nice short loop hike that included some fun bridges, plants, animals, and a waterfall.

After that hike, we drove to Haew Su Wat Waterfall (น้ำตกเหวสุวัต). On the way we saw this deer. I’m not yet sure what kind it is.

Haew Su Wat Waterfall brought back some fun memories. I’d been there two times previously, once with friends from Bangkok at the beginning of 2008

and once with my students from Ubon on Christmas day at the end of 2008

Coming back 17 years later it was striking how much some things can remain so much the same while others change entirely.

Back at the visitors center waiting for the night safari to start we caught sight of some fun wildlife including hornbills and Sumbar deer in the fading light.

On the night safari we saw more animals including the barking deer and porcupine below.
