As part of our 2024 October Break, we stopped by Khao Khiew Zoo (สวนสัตว์เปิดเขาเขียว) for a second visit. (You can read about our first visit here: my perspective / my daughter’s perspective).

When my father-in-law told people in the States he was visiting Thailand, he was repeatedly asked if he was going to see Moo Deng (หมูเด้ง); so we added the stop to our itinerary.
While waiting 45 minutes to see Moo Deng, we entertained ourselves.

When we got to Moo Deng, we found the zoo had developed a better system for making sure that after waiting in line, you had a pretty decent look at the baby pygmy hippo for your 5 minutes turn.

Elsewhere in the zoo it was fun to see a different. Pygmy hippo running under the water.

On this our second visit we prioritized making it to some shows we had missed the first time.
This time around we made it to the Penguin Parade. Not only was it easier to see them when they were out of their cage, but my daughter also enjoyed feeding them (50฿).

The seal show was a chance discovery. We hadn’t seen its 1:30 start time published anywhere. I was impressed by the seal handlers passion for education, though it might be hard to catch without some knowledge of Thai.

We also enjoyed the flying parade. Zoo keepers on opposite sides of a lake used whistles and fish to draw wild birds back and forth across the water.
Another place we visited for the first time was the large primates exhibits. They had been too far from the center of the zoo for us to travel there the last time when we were on foot. (This time we knew to pay to take our car on the car loop).

It was a great day.
After the day at the zoo, we continued further east. At one rest stop, we saw both this pickup truck with a significant load of bamboo, and a waterfall oasis at this Amazon Cafe.
