Moo Deng

Yesterday we went to see the much memed Moo Deng (หมูเด้ง) and her friends at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo (สวนสัตว์เปิดเขาเขียว).

While I can see why people find Moo Deng cute, I would say if you just see Moo Deng, you’re missing the best the zoo has to offer.

If baby animals are your thing, the zoo actually had several.

As the zoo’s name suggests, there are several wide open exhibits such as the African Savanna with multiple species roaming around.

One highlight for me was the large aviary with multiple paths to explore—on the ground and through the treetops—providing lots of opportunities to see the dozens of tropical birds.

The large variety of wild cats were enjoyed by our kids.

There were lots of other fun animals.

Many great moments didn’t translate to images.

We didn’t make it everywhere, in part due to some heavy downpours, in part due to the size of the zoo, and in part due to some maps that could have been much clearer. While in the park, we saw three different maps, none of which were to scale, and all of which left out information to be desired. While working on this post, I found this map. It still doesn’t have everything, but it does state that the pink loop is for vehicles. We tried to walk it, and burnt ourselves out.

One other thing I wish I’d known before we paid for our tickets, is that there is a two year zoo membership available for less than the price of two visits for our family. The membership includes admission to several other zoos in Thailand.

Another thing to do at the start of your visit, would be to determine which of the day’s shows you want to make sure you attend.

Don’t bother packing a lunch. There are lots of great options available throughout the park at reasonable prices. If you were to bring your own and if you turned your back, the wild monkeys would probably make off it with it. We saw a troop of monkeys ripping open bags of chips in the back of a golf cart.

Sounds like a wonderful day and looks like a repeat visit would be in order. You and your kids are having wonderful experiences! The tusks on the elephant seem excessively long. I wonder if they can be shortened? I’ve never seen them so long! They look heavy and cumbersome as though they would be a detriment to its health and lifestyle. I imagine though that the keepers know what is best. It’s fun to watch shows from various zoos and learn how the keepers care for the animals.
